In frames of EMECS 11 – Sea Coasts XXVI Joint Conference "Managing Risks to Coastal Regions and Communities in a Changing World" there will be a special session combined with the second meeting of officials of BRICS countries in the priority area "Prevention and Mitigation of Natural Disasters".
The event will be held according to the Declaration on cooperation in implementation of multilateral research projects and the Working plan of 2015-2018 of BRICS countries in the field of sciences, technologies and innovations signed by the Ministers of science, technologies and innovations of BRICS countries. The priority area "Prevention and Mitigation of Natural Disasters" of BRICS countries is governed by the National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters of Brazil – CEMADEN. The Russian State Hydrometeorological University is a contact point from Russia in the priority area.
The first kick-off meeting of officials of BRICS countries in this priority area was held on October 29, 2015 in New Delhi, in frames of the 6th Annual Conference of the International Society for Integrated Disaster Risk Management, IDRiM.
The second meeting - the Specialized BRICS session "Prevention and Mitigation of Natural Disasters in Coastal Regions", will take place within the EMECS 11 – Sea Coasts XXVI Joint Conference "Managing Risks to Coastal Regions and Communities in a Changing World" on August 26 at 10.00-12.00.
At the meeting the current state of the priority area in each of the BRICS countries will be discussed, taking into account the geographical position of BRICS countries and the variety of issues in the prevention and mitigation of natural disasters, as well as a possibility of joint activities and development of joint scientific and technological products will be considered.
The Brazilian side being a leader of the priority area has prepared the corresponding letter approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, and now the participants and the BRICS session programme are being negotiated.
